Parvati and Satara Road areas to get cleaner water
Pune: Parvati and Satara Road areas are all set to get cleaner water with a new 500 MLD water purification tank.
The tank, which will become operational on Saturday, was built at a cost of Rs179 crore and will improve water supply to Parvati, Satara Road, Bibvewadi, Dhankawdi and nearby areas.
The project was greenlit in 2013 and funds were approved the same year by the Union urban development ministry’s central sanctioning and monitoring committee.
According to civic officials, the new plant will provide an alternative to the existing plants, like the Cantonment water treatment plant (300 MLD) and Parvati phase-I water treatment plant (200 MLD). These tanks have become structurally weak and are prone to leaking. The Cantonment tank is around 90 years old, while the one at the Parvati plant was built 45 years ago.
The Cantonment facility had had an operational life of about 30 years. However, officials continued to use it, with some upgrades to the treatment facility.
“The old plants will be decommissioned and demolished in due course. The newly built plant at Parvati will work as a substitute for these plants,” said mayor Mukta Tilak.
