SWaCH seeks multi-layered plastic review
PUNE: Wastepickers’ collective SWaCH has written to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to initiate a discussion on the use of multi-layered plastics in Maharashtra.
Solid Waste Collection and Handling (SWaCH) said these multi-layered plastics used for packaging chips, wafers, biscuits, chocolates and candies are the actual problem for wastepickers. “Besides, this kind of plastic waste is non-recyclable,” Aparna Susarla of SWaCH said.
On March 23, the state government had banned single-use plastics like tableware and carry bags. “Though the notification specifically mentions PET bottles and milk bags, it says nothing about multi-layered plastics,” Susarla said.
Susarla said prompted by all these reasons, SWaCH and other wastepickers’ associations have written to the CM, requesting him to hold a meeting to discuss this issue.
