Pune: The 157th birth anniversary celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore will be observed by cultural forum Upasana, along with Lalit Kala Kendra, at Savitribai Phule Pune University on May 6.
The event will also focus on Upasana’s efforts at attracting performing artistes to the treasure trove of Tagore’s creations. Meritorious students of Lalit Kala Kendra will be felicitated with Rabindra Puraskars.
An open participation or pheri, known as “baitalik”, will be organised to mark the event. “This is a procession of singing and dancing, which will attract onlookers and grow in size as it winds across the university,” said Sharmila Mazumdar, the founder of of the cultural forum Upasana.
The event will include a segment on experimental adaptations of Tagore’s works to various classical and regional styles of performance. This year’s celebration will also include an item called “Shata Kanthe Gitanjali” (Gitanjali in 100 voices)”.
Rehearsals and practice sessions are currently under way to ensure that the rendition is not out of tune.
