PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: As part of the smart city project, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will lay a 1,000km optical fibre network, install 270 Wi-Fi hotspots, 50 smart kiosks and Variable Message Display systems.
Fibre infrastructure is an important component of the smart city initiative, and would connect municipal offices and other government institutions. The network would also serve as the backbone for connectivity at Wi-Fi spots and would be located at all market places, government offices, recreation spots, and educational institutes.
Citizens can use smart kiosks to pay water charges, property tax, avail of services, pay other utility bills for government services such as gas, electricity, recharge PMPML’s proposed MI card, book railway and bus tickets and also tickets for events around the city. The kiosks will be installed at government offices, bus stops, markets, and key areas witnessed high footfall.

Variable Message Display systems will share real-time basis information and guidance on traffic congestions, diversions, emergencies, programmes, weather and other important announcements. A total of 60 VMD systems are to be installed at traffic junctions and markets.

The Pimpri Chinchwad Smart City Limited has invited bids to select a system integrator to implement these projects.

The smart city proposal also includes uniform pole infrastructure in the twin township for devices like CCTV cameras and traffic detectors in a planned and structured manner, to avoid repeated digging and infrastructure laying work in the city. Pimpri Chinchwad was included in the Smart Cities Mission in the third round, in December 2016, just before the 2017 municipal elections.
