Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s tree census, that has been undertaken using modern technology, is now in the final stages. Since 2016, the civic body has counted over 26 lakh trees and the counting is expected to be completed in August.

According to the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection & Preservation Of Trees Act 1975, carrying out a census of existing trees in all lands within the jurisdiction of a civic body is mandatory once every five years.

“The target is to completed the census in the next three to four months. Details about the trees will be made available once the counting is complete. We will also get information about carbon emissions,” said Ashok Ghorpade, head of the civic body’s garden department.

As per PMC officials, the civic body has planned to conduct a geo-enabled tree census survey and plot the same on the city map. A private IT firm has been assigned the task to develop a survey dashboard, which should be cross-browser and cross-platform compatible. This will give the garden department a holistic view of the survey work being conducted within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) jurisdiction. The dashboard provides an idea about current progress of the project, status of quality checks, layout of different varieties/species, and distribution under different wards.

PMC officials said that citizens can also participate in the survey either by physically submitting information about trees by visiting the garden department office or by uploading the data online. Citizens can visit PMC’s official website to share the information.

On March 21 2013, the Bombay High Court had directed PMC to carry out a pilot tree census project using GIS and submit a report on the same. The court had issued the directive in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding the destruction of the city’s green cover. The census, however, was delayed due to issues in the tendering process.
“When the census is complete, the data will help PMC keep a tab on illegal tree cutting and verify replanting of trees by builders,” said a PMC official.

He added that the 2013 census had revealed that 38.60 lakh trees were found in the city. The number is expected to cross 40 lakh during the current survey.
