Awards for social catalysts at Vasant Vyakhyanmala

Pune: Vasant Vyakhyanmala, the 144-year-old spring lecture series, has introduced a special award named after social reformer Mahadev Govind Ranade, popularly known as Nyaymurti Ranade, from this year to honour citizens working as catalysts in the society.

Five organizations set up in the pre-Independence era for social reforms have come together for instituting the award, said Deepak Tilak, the chairman of Vaktrutvottejak Sabha that organizes this series, while addressing the a news conference on Monday.

The first award will be conferred upon journalist P Sainath. “Apart from his journalistic works, Sainath has been doing archival
works through his new initiative called People Archives of Rural India. The award aims to give recognition to this work,” Tilak said.
Mandar Bedekar, the chief coordinator of the spring lecture series, said the one-month-long event will start on Saturday, April 21. It will be held at Tilak Smarak Mandir on Tilak road at 6.30pm.
Anil Kakodkar, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission of India, will deliver the opening lecture on ‘India in knowledge-centric world’. The concluding lecture will be given by Ravindra Marathe, the managing director of Bank of Maharashtra, on the banking system.
