Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University will mentor other universities in the state to fare better in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Pune university was among the top 10 in the country.
Governor C Vidyasagar Rao, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and vice-chancellors of all universities met in Mumbai recently to discuss the rankings. The fact that only one university had a better position was a worry for the education department.
It was then decided to study how Pune university had prepared and where it scored and take guidance.
The rankings for 2018 were released by the ministry of human resource development. Pune university moved up to the 16th position from 18th, last year. Among the universities, it is in the ninth spot, up from last year’s tenth.
“We received enquiries from other institutes and universities about how we prepared. The state government has instructed us to guide colleges and universities and study points on which they could improve to have better rankings. We will soon conduct a meeting to discuss the strategies that could be adopted for improvement,” vice-chancellor Nitin Karmalkar said.
A vice-chancellor who attending this meeting said, “The governor categorically questioned some representatives of some universities that did not fare well in NIRF. They were told to draw a road map for a better standing.”
Education minister Vinod Tawde, who attended the meeting, said, “A committee to monitor the functioning of key institutes and universities in Maharashtra would soon be formed for a performance watch. SPPU will have a key role in this committee but the larger picture will be clear in a few days.”
Karmalkar said it will help their quest to get the Institute of Eminence status. “We can get Rs 100 crore funding as per the guidelines of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan,” he added.
