PUNE: The Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) inaugurated its refurbished crematorium, with new facilities and spruced up surroundings, according to board officials. The crematorium at the Muktidham complexnear the PCB headquarters, which has been designed on theme of a person’s journey from birth to death, has cost around Rs 1.8 crore.
PCB officials say that this crematorium is the only one in the city which provides a large number of facilities for cremation and has been constructed according to greenhouse-gases emission guidelines from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Besides an electric crematorium, there are five fire-based pits, a small temple and platforms to conduct rituals, a garden, a store room to store wood, and a waiting area with drinking water and restrooms.
To abide by MPCB’s pollution control standards, the PCB has installed a new pollution control system with a 100-feet high chimney, along with a hood, scrubber, and blower. The mechanism cleans the toxic gases and smoke generated from the cremations, and cleaner air is released through the chimney. Board engineers say that carbon particles will be collected from the smoke as part of the air filtration process. They added that the water which is used to clean the ash will be recycled and used to water trees in the PCB gardens.
