Pimpri Chinchwad: The waste-to-energy (WTE) plant at the Moshi garbage depot will be a successful project as the calorific value of garbage is very high, said Sanjay Kulkarni, executive engineer of PCMC’s environment department.
Kulkarni said, “In a joint venture, Brazilian firm Lara Enviro and Indian agency Anthony Enviro Private Ltd wil build the WTE plant on a 6-acre plot at the garbage depot. The work will begin in May.”

The agencies have to submit Rs12 crore to the municipal corporation after which a concession agreement will be finalized. Around 11.5MW power will be generated at the plant every day.

Kulkarni was speaking to reporters on Wednesday on the sidelines of a major fire that broke out at the Moshi garbage depot last week.

Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge held a meeting with municipal commissioner Shravan Hardikar and additional commissioner Pravin Ashtikar on Monday. Landge also called for the establishment of a fire station near Moshi.

The plant will be on design-build-operate-transfer basis for a period of 21 years. The project cost is Rs208 crore.

The power generated would be used by other sewage treatment plants, municipal buildings and civic hospitals at the rate of Rs5 per unit. PCMC has been using power at Rs7 to Rs18 per unit, Kulkarni said.
