Pune: Citizens who wish to dispose of banned plastic items can approach the ward offices of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), where arrangements have been made for collection of plastic items.
“Instructions have been issued to sanitary inspectors in all ward offices. They will assist citizens in disposing of plastic goods. We have also made similar arrangements at PMC’s solid waste management department at Shivajinagar. The items can be deposited at these offices during office hours,” said Suresh Jatap, head of PMC’s solid waste management department.
He said that apart from the 15 ward offices, people can dump banned plastic items at 160 arogya kothis (storage facilities) across the city. Besides common citizens, even traders, who trade in such products can hand over banned items at these designated places.
On March 23, the state government had issued the Maharashtra Plastic and Thermocol Products (Manufacture, Usage, Sale, Transport, Handling and Storage) notification banning manufacture, use, storage, distribution, sale, import and transportation of plastic items. The ban covers a wide range of articles made from plastic and thermocol, including, bags, dishes, cups, glasses, bowls, forks, spoon, straw, containers, small PET bottles and decoration items.
As per the civic body’s data, out of 1,600 tonnes of garbage generated daily in the city, nearly 12% is plastic material. The share of carry bags and thermocol products is 2.5% and 1.5% respectively.
