Water To Be Rationed Soon

While the city will not have to face water cuts right now, it might soon have to live with rationing of the precious resource. Considering the early heatwave this year and the situation of water reserves, Pune’s guardian minister Girish Bapat had told the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to use only the allocated amount of water and implement cuts if the need arises. While the PMC authorities have decided not to resort to water cuts immediately, they will go ahead with rationing which they feel will help in saving a huge amount of water.
These decisions were taken following the canal committee meeting last week where the issue of distribution of water from the dams around Pune was discussed. The meeting was preceded by an exchange between the PMC and the irrigation department over the use of water by the civic body. The irrigation department had alleged that PMC is using 1,600 MLD, which is way above the approved 900 MLD quota. Considering this, Girish Bapat asked the PMC authorities to curtail the use of water to 1,350 MLD. This according to him would ensure adequate supply to the rural areas.
“They (the PMC) have to use the water that is allotted to them. The farmers have already saved two TMC water from what was supplied to them. Now it’s Pune’s turn. We will supply only the approved amount of water. How to use it and how to save is their ‘decision,” Bapat said.
