An English teacher from a remote village in Satara district will present his work — of successfully teaching English to rural students — at an international conference in Brighton UK.
Balaji Jadhav, who teaches at a Zilla Parishad school in Pulkoti village, has been invited by International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL) to present at conference of educators from 100 different countries.
He said, “I thought of using information and communication technology (ICT) in my teaching. I used software to introduce students to small words and their usage in sentences. I filmed the students initially and showed them their progress eventually. They watched themselves talking in English on large screen and it in turn motivated few others.”
While there are 50 other teachers from India participating in the conference, Jadhav is the only educator who is invited as a speaker. He will narrate his techniques and success stories in teaching English at the event that will be held from April 10 to 13.
Jadhav is also a Google innovator who has been connected to different educators in the world.
To make students in the village aware of different English accents, Jadhav also organises video conferencing with other countries’ students, who speak in different accents. Students in the village learn from the same. His endeavours have won several prestigious awards, including National E-Innovation Award 2017 and Yashwant Adarsh Seva Puraskar, 2018.
Jadhav has also participated in webinars organised by IATEFL to discuss the interesting ways of teaching language to students. The webinars, video conferences and software have made many students from classes II to classes X confident with English.
Jadhav’s presentation titled ‘Connecting to Global World’ at the UK conference will comprise his methods and techniques for teaching rural children. He will also participate in an interactive session at the Oxford University and at Google England.
Jadhav said, “The happiness of imparting English and instilling confidence in students is above everything. ICT is an important tool to teach students English wherein students learn the language in a playful manner and it also holds their interest. My presentation at UK will have all these techniques and the result which it gave.”
